The Venetian Castle (Kastro) of Naxos stands on the hilltop above Naxos Town. Built by Marco Sanudo in 1207 after he conquered the island and established the Duchy of Naxos, the castle's walls enclose a medieval quarter of narrow lanes, tower houses, and Catholic churches. The main entrance, the Trani Gate, is the only surviving gate of the original seven, and the castle quarter remains inhabited to this day.
