The emery mines of Naxos are among the most significant industrial heritage sites on the island. Naxos has been a major source of emery — an extremely hard natural abrasive rock — since antiquity, and commercial mining intensified in the 19th and 20th centuries. The mines are located in the mountainous interior near the villages of Koronos and Aperathos, with the processed ore historically transported by cable car to the port of Moutsouna on the eastern coast for export.
